Natalie Henshaw’s work with the Campaign for Historic Trades has been instrumental in helping bring the national preservation trades community together. Recently, The Campaign for Historic Trades released a first-of-its-kind labor study on the status of historic trades in America. Analysis shows the need for a larger and better-trained historic trades workforce; 100,000 workers needed within the next decade. This knowledge and awareness can help empower the community to work together to recognize and expand on the programs that currently exist while also building new ‘funnels of opportunity’ to attract dynamic individuals into our high–demand fields. Rainer Schmitt will share his 40 year journey in glass, exploring and experimenting with the material. Recently, he has found himself at the helm of a glass studio and a glass manufacturer - two companies that encompass legacy but that must also innovate with enthusiasm to face the challenges of the day. Schmitt’s passion for the material has not waned in the slightest in over 40 years and he will share some of the things he is most excited about in the glass world today.

We hope to send you on your way with a toolbox of techniques that will help you better understand your own set of project challenges, and how you might be able to create a more successful illumination system.

The relationship between stained glass and architecture has changed over the course of its almost 1,500 year relationship.  The pinnacle of this relationship was during the Gothic period of architecture because the primary objectives of Gothic ecclesiastical architecture was to create the ‘glories of heaven on earth’ as expressed by the founder of Gothic architecture, About Suger.  Stained glass was the vehicle by which to achieve this objective, though to do so a new style of architecture was developed from new engineering and construction principles and methods, such as flying buttresses and gothic arches.  It can be argued that this was the first and only time in the history of architecture that a new architectural style was developed so that more of an art form could be added.  

As the objectives of architecture changed in succeeding periods, so too did the relationship between architecture and glass which never again reached the heights of the Gothic period.  Architecture has gone through momentous changes over the past two centuries, which has led architects to once again draw upon the expressive characteristics of artistic glass to contribute in the achievement of their objective, which is of a more visually dynamic and expressive architecture.  

With these new opportunities come new challenges.

The lecture will consist of slides of historical glass and architecture as well as a brief historical survey of architecture in the 19th-21st centuries.  There will be a focus on contemporary examples of the architectural application of expressive glass and an introduction of what is on the horizon.

Dalle de verre, also known as faceted glass, was used extensively in mid-century Modernist architecture, in part because of the ability to produce large installations in less time than traditional stained glass, but also because its visual qualities favored abstract designs and suited the aesthetics of the period. The fabrication of dalle de verre panels was originally highly experimental; material and technique variations were employed in attempts to improve the panel aesthetics, workability, and durability. As is the case with many Modern constructions, the innovations employed to fabricate this façade material are often the source of inherent flaws that lead to its decay, and conservators are increasingly faced with the challenges of preserving dalle de verre and the luminous facades designed to showcase it. This presentation will provide an overview of the history and technical evolution of the material, including fabrication practices and installation methods. It will also examine decay mechanisms and provide guidance for conservation of dalle de verre. The presented research is based on a survey of dalle de verre at approximately sixty sites in the United States and Europe, whose construction period spans fifty years, beginning in the mid-1930s. The majority of these sites were designed by the French stained-glass artist Gabriel Loire, one of the foremost practitioners of dalle de verre, who fabricated bold installations, including entire facades, towers, and domes, with both concrete and epoxy matrix materials.

In 2018, I was challenged as a high school educator to create a glass curriculum on a shoe string budget that was to start the following year.  I immediately sought out information on how to begin a successful program and found little on the subject both locally and nationally.  So, as part of my Masters Degree capstone project from the University of Florida, I created a practical curriculum on a budget that would take beginner students from no glass experience to creating large panel windows in stained glass and in 3 months.  After 4 years using this curriculum at Timpanogos High School in Orem, Utah, I am prepared to present the successes and pitfalls when using glass in a classroom of teenagers! This presentation by Powerpoint will include lesson plans, budget ideas for working with supplies in large orders, how to present the concept to administrators and ways to engage students successfully.  There will be a 15 minute period for questions from the audience at the end of the presentation. The goal is that participants will walk away with a working plan on starting a stained glass and mosaics program in their schools, homes or studios successfully.

After years of pondering about making my perfect studio, I made my dream come true during the Covid pandemic. Along with a fabulous builder, holding my hand every step of the way, I started planning and designing every detail. Being that my studio was going to be on the first floor, attached to my kitchen and family room, functionality and esthetics were at the top of the list. Collecting photos and ideas from the internet, lighting, window, materials, water source, plugs, flooring and the all important storage . . .my studio was coming to fruition. I will discuss the 'Do's & Don'ts of making good choices for making the studio beautiful and functional.
