Conferences

Oakland, CA – June 27—29, 2008

The SGAA will celebrate its 99th Annual Conference at the Marriott Oakland City Center. The Conference will focus on West Coast glass.

The outstanding schedule will include demonstrations, lectures, panel discussions, and an art glass tour. Special events will include pre-Conference Workshops, Dorothy L. Maddy Silent Auction, “The Bay Area Exhibition,” and the SGAA Annual Raffle. Post-Conference tours are being planned to the Napa Valley. For Conference updates, visit www.stainedglass.org.

Philadelphia, PA – Aug.1–3, 2008

The American Glass Guild will hold their third annual conference, followed by two days of glass tours. Artists, artisans, conservators, and historians will speak. The Guild is also sponsoring the James C. Whitney Memorial Scholarship. Deadline for submission is April 15, 2008.

Glaziers Hall, London, July 31 – Aug. 1

The British Society of Master Glass Painters will host an international, two-day, non-residential conference. Speakers will include Peter Cormack, F.S.A.; Dr. Iris Nestler; Julie L. Sloan, M.S.; Martin Harrison, F.S.A.; Wilhelm Derix; Patrick Reyntiens, O.B.E.; and Alex Beleschenko. BSMGP Members £140. Single-day, student and non-member rates also available. The Museum of Science and Industry will open The Glass Experience, an innovative and interactive exhibit that reveals the science, craftsmanship, and beauty that is the world of glass and glassmaking. Bozeman, MT – Nov. 1 – Feb. 27, 2009

Zoot Enterprises Corporate Gallery will host the premier of “Waters of Renewal.” This grand-scale artistic creation speaks volumes about current environmental concerns. Seven subjects — Oceans, Wildfires, Rainforest, War, Famine, Addiction, and Our Children are captured in stained glass. The eighth panel, “Waters of Renewal,” illuminates the belief that humanity can find solutions to preserve our planet and the beings that live here. Tacoma, WA – Feb. 16–Sept. 21, 2008

Opening in conjunction with Lino Tagliapietra in Retrospect: A Modern Renaissance in Italian Glass, the Museum of Glass presents Dante Marioni: Form, Color, Pattern, a mid-career survey comprising more than 20 exceptional glass works crafted over the past two decades by Dante Marioni. Apprenticeship Programs

Brooklyn, NY: The Brooklyn Stained Glass Conservation Center invites interested people to apply for a two-year apprenticeship training program. Salary and benefits are included. Siena, Italy: The Vetrate Artistiche Toscane is accepting applications for its apprenticeship programs. There are apprenticeships lasting two months (January – February; March – April; November – December) and three lasting one month (May, August and October). Although designed to be of benefit to the beginner and intermediate, advanced and professional glass artists have also found the apprenticeship useful to enhance their skills. Apprenticeships will be held in Siena in English and target most aspects of glass craft. Intensive hands-on courses are also available. Gatlinburg, TN: The Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts: Five 11-month residencies in all media for pre-professional, self-directed artists, mid-June thru May. Bingen, WA: Peter McGrain has opened Peter McGrain Cascadia Studio, a new teaching facility in the Columbia River National Scenic Area.
