FYI: Notes and News

Conferences

Oklahoma City, OK – June 17–20, 2009 You’re Invited: The SGAA will meet another historic milestone in Oklahoma City as they celebrate their 100th Annual Summer Conference. Get ready for something extra special. Karen Hendrix, our Conference host, has years of experience creating conferences and overseas tours. The Conference will focus on “Explorations in Change: Contemporary Glass Movement and Disaster Restoration.” Oklahoma City witnessed one of the worst acts of terrorism in this country. Karen restored several of the churches impacted by the bomb blast, which led to the idea of exploring the enormous tasks presented by both man-made and natural disasters. The Keynote Speaker will be Gordon Heuther. Conference Speakers will include an incredible array of stained glass artists: Ellen Mandelbaum, Kathy Barnard, Debra Coombs, Kathy Jordan, Karen Hendrix, Martin Rambusch, Jules Mominee, and Cynthia Courage.

The Stained Glass Association of America, as it steps into its next century, is working to include accreditation for the many new architectural art glass forms. Another part of this Conference will explore the many innovative designs and techniques evolving in our craft.

We will be touring the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, which houses the largest permanent Chihuly collection, and will be hosting a collection that contains several Cézannes while we are there. We will be lunching at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame famous for its wonderful collection of western and Native American Art.

The Stained Glass School will hold pre-Conference classes on Wednesday, June 17, so be sure to arrive early for these special sessions. Jerome Durr, Director of The Stained Glass School, will present “Designing for the Space and Client.” Bob Markert, an SGAA Accredited Artist/Designer, will present “A New Style of Painting – Intermediate to Advanced Levels.”

The School is also requesting that everyone dig deep into your closets and even look through your display panels for items for the auction. Funds will be dedicated to the Dorothy L. Maddy Silent Auction, but the Stained Glass School will also be looking for items to sell that will raise funds for the new-building program.

The official Conference hotel will be the Renaissance Oklahoma City Convention Center Hotel & Spa. Thursday, June 18 thru Saturday, June 20. Make your hotel reservations now! They can always be changed or cancelled within 72 hours of the reservation date. To make room reservations, call Renaissance National Reservations Center at 800.468.357. To receive our room rate of $129 per night, refer to the SGAA 2009 Annual Conference. All rooms must be reserved by May 29, 2009. We look forward to seeing you in OK City!

Exhibitions

Bozeman, MT – Nov. 1, 2008 – Feb. 27, 2009; Zoot Enterprises Corporate Gallery will host the premiere of “Waters of Renewal.” This grand-scale artistic creation speaks volumes about current environmental concerns. Seven subjects — Oceans, Wildfires, Rainforest, War, Famine, Addiction, and Our Children — are captured in stained glass. The eighth panel, “Waters of Renewal,” illuminates the belief that humanity can find solutions to preserve our planet and the beings that live here. For more information, visit www.watersofrenewal.org.

Tacoma, WA – Sept. 14, 2008 – April 19, 2009; The Museum of Glass will present Laguna Murano Chandelier, a majestic Neo-Baroque chandelier created by Dale Chihuly in collaboration with Italian glass masters Lino Tagliapietra and Pino Signoretto. This immense and elegant chandelier of individually blown and sculpted glass elements commands approximately 1,500 square feet and includes five separate elements — two suspended from the ceiling and three which rise from the floor. Punctuated by opalescent flames and festooned with fantastical sea creatures, foliate masses, mermaids, and kings, this splendid golden-green tangle glows, evoking the Muranese lagoon. For more information, visit www.museumofglass.org.

International Trade Shows

Düsseldorf, Germany – Oct. 21–25; “Window to the World of Glass” will enable professionals in the glass industry to view the latest in glass technology from production, processing, and finishing to door making and architecture. Participants will also discover the latest technology on display. Two of the key themes will be photovoltaics and solar thermal systems. The motto for the Architects’ Congress will be “Transparency! Glass and Façade Technology.” Visitors can relax while viewing the “glassart” section, where international artists will exhibit their artworks made from glass — ranging from containers and sculptures to glass paintings. For more than 30 years, Glasstec has served as a forum for collaboration between manufacturers, architects, designers, and end users. For more information on Glasstec, email info@mdna.com or visit www.mdna.com.
